Proven Attorneys For Brachial Plexus Injury Claims

What Is The Brachial Plexus?

The brachial plexus is a group of nerves that controls the movement and sensation from the spine to the shoulder, arm and hand. These nerves can be stretched, compressed, damaged or torn during delivery when one or both of the baby’s shoulders become lodged or cannot pass through the mother’s pelvis without manipulation. Unfortunately, some brachial plexus injuries occur as a result of medical mistakes or delivery room error, including:

  • Failing to recognize cephalopelvic disproportion – baby’s head too large to be delivered naturally
  • Failing to recognize macrosomia – baby is too large to be delivered naturally
  • Improper use of forceps or excessive vacuum extraction to force baby through birth canal
  • Failing to recognize that the baby is breech

Brachial Plexus Injuries Caused By Medical Mistakes

Brachial plexus birth injuries caused by medical mistakes or errors in the delivery room may affect all or only part of the brachial plexus with varying degrees of nerve damage and lack of muscle control. Some children will have no muscle control or feeling in their arm or hand. Some may be permanently paralyzed. Some children may be able to use their arm, but have little control over their shoulder, wrist or hand. Brachial plexus birth injuries may include:

  • Avulsions
  • Rupture
  • Neuropraxia
  • Neuromas
  • Shoulder dystocia
  • Erb’s palsy
  • Klumpke’s palsy
  • Horner’s syndrome
