What Is Long QT Syndrome?
If a child, teen or young adult exhibits extreme fatigue while participating in sports or faints following exercise or excitement, they may have warning signs of a serious medical condition known as Long QT Syndrome. Long QT Syndrome is a serious heart rhythm disorder that can potentially cause fast and irregular heartbeats which may trigger a sudden fainting spell, seizure or sudden death.
The term "Long QT" refers to a abnormal pattern seen on EKG where the QT wave interval of the heartbeat is prolonged or lasts longer than the normal measure of time between heartbeats. This fibrillation of the heart can trigger a sudden, uncontrollable and dangerous heart rhythm or arrhythmia in response to exercise or stress.
Long QT Syndrome is treatable if diagnosed. Unfortunately, medical mistakes and physician error, whether failing to order appropriate diagnostic testing, misinterpreting a child’s EKG, or ignoring symptoms that a patient or parent reports concerning episodes of collapse, fainting or syncope following exercise or sporting activities may result in serious injury or death from this condition.
