Delayed car accident symptoms to watch out for

Pennsylvania has a rather high car-accident rate. In particular, the state has one of the highest rates in the country concerning car accidents involving deer, says the Observer-Reporter. 

Many collisions result in minimal damage and injuries. Some people feel perfectly fine after an auto accident and do not even go to see a doctor. However, seeing a doctor is crucial, because a medical professional can find injuries you are not aware of yet. In the weeks and months after the crash, you need to pay attention to the following symptoms in case they pop up at a later date. 

Numbness

Numerous people experience whiplash after a collision. This can result in damage to the neck and spinal cord. Over time, you may no longer be able to feel anything in your arms or legs. 

Back pain

Additionally, any damage to your vertebrae could result in significant pain in the back. In particular, rear-end collisions can lead to lower back pain that requires prompt treatment. You may not realize the extent of the damage without an X-ray to see whether the nerves, ligaments or muscles sustained damage. 

Changes in personality

It is possible to suffer from a concussion from a car accident. You may feel fine in the immediate aftermath, but you need to be cautious if you experience any changes in your mental faculties after a crash. Signs of mental issues include impaired memory, depression and vision problems. 

Post traumatic stress disorder

Although PTSD commonly becomes associated with veterans, anyone can develop it from experiencing a severe trauma. After a severe car crash, a person may suffer from disturbing and vivid memories of the event. Some people may experience PTSD to such a significant degree that they cannot even get back inside a car. Children are particularly susceptible to PTSD, so it is important to get kids psychological help after a crash.
