What are some winter safety tips for driving on the PA turnpike?

On Behalf of | Oct 24, 2018 | Auto Accidents, Firm News |

The Pennsylvania Turnpike is a well-traveled road. As such, it is prone to many accidents throughout the year. While accidents may happen anytime, it is winter that poses the highest risk to you as you drive on this road. Heavy traffic and bad road conditions add up to serious hazards that make it difficult to drive. There are some things you can do to help keep yourself safer while traveling this route.

According to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, cautious driving habits are your best bet to staying safe when traveling this roadway. You should reduce your speed and increase the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Also, make sure to turn your headlights on, especially if it is actively snowing. This makes your vehicle more visible.

You also need to be more aware of the vehicles around you. Watch out for snow plows and never pass one that is actively plowing the roadway. It will throw snow debris at your vehicle, which could impede your ability to see clearly and could make your side of the roadway especially slippery.

Also, pay attention to the changing weather and road condition. Adjust your speed as you need to for safety. Stay on top of emergency information, too. Try to stay on top of road closings, accident locations and other pertinent information.

Above all else, if you do not have to drive in severe weather, then do not do it. Wait until the weather has calmed down and the road is clear. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
